Lake stocking?

So I understand we will be stocking bass and bluegill. No trout? I grew up fishing for bass, so I don't mind bass. But what are your thoughts? Catfish? Will we install some sort of aeration system (my preference, especially for trout)?

Kim and Warren: Here is what I know about the Lake Management Committee:

LAKE MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE

Chairman: Sam Ogburn (Board Member)

Steven Gilreath (Board Member)

Kim Marmo

A summary of the Ripshin Lake Corporation Board of Directors meeting on July 27, 2023, indicated that President John Seward recommended to the Board "that the Fish Committee and Lake Management Committee be combined into a single Lake Management Committee for the near future as the actions for each are interdependent. He asked directors Sam Ogburn and Steven Gilreath to serve with Sam Ogburn as chair of the committee. Several additional potential members were identified and will be contacted about their availability to serve. John Seward will be taking into consideration the Board’s discussion and recommendations, as well as input from other Members, in appointing the committee.

"The Lake Management Committee members will begin work to develop a Lake Management Plan for short-term rehabilitation and long-term sustainability including the evaluation and recommendations from the Lake Management Consultants reports."

There has been no further report regarding appointments to that joint committee, nor has it met.

It has been suggested that those who have been named call a meeting on their own. I would second that motion and suggest that a Chairman be named by those committee members who are present and that two other members be appointed. I am certain President John Seward has too much on his plate -- namely the dam rehabilitaiton project -- to be concerned about this committee. (I'm uncertain why Sam Ogburn has not called a meeting with the ones who have been appointed.)

As it stands, we have to have a lake to manage, but perhaps this group needs to start getting some ideas together. I would recommend Billy Vance as a member, and perhaps you would like to serve, Warren, as you obviously have an interest. Billy Vance was on the Fish Committee (which also did not meet) prior to the combining of the two committees.

There you have it; that's all I know.

Trout?

Will the lake be stocked this Spring? Or is this year gonna be skipped due to, uh, circumstances?

Nothing's being stocked this fall. President John Seward recently told me he expects the lake to be refilled next season -- which presumably means in March or April. As for whether it will be stocked then, there's been no word except for what was released as a summary of the July 27 Board of Directors meeting which you should have received via email on August 9 from Secretary Anna Gillon. Did you receive that email?

Bluegill galore

Hi. I am new around here--just joined the forums. My wife, Stacey, and I bought the Shelton property at 196. We've been doing some fishing and caught many bluegill, a half dozen or so rainbow trout, and a few smallmouth. We had enough bluegill (couple of dozen) for a good fish fry with our parents and sons. My father-in-law is an avid bluegill fisherman and said that the bluegill here look as healthy, or more so, as any he has seen.

I grew up fishing for catfish, bass, and crappie, and haven't yet found the crappie holes. Or any catfish. Are there catfish in the lake?

Hey, Warren! Somehow I missed this post. I know the lake is down right now, but next time you catch a smallmouth bass, please post a photo! It's been years since I heard of anyone catching a smallmouth and we thought they were long gone.

We stocked trout in a spring snow ...

Several members gathered on a cold, snowy April day to release 500 pounds of rainbow trout at various docks, up and down the lake. This is an annual event and everyone is invited to be a part! We’ll see you next spring!
